Picture of the Week: North Carolina State House

Sticking to our theme of the month, the “North Carolina State House” has been selected for our picture of the week.

This water color painting was made in 1818 by Jacob Marling.   It depicts the State House before its destruction in 1831.  Jacob Marling was the first professional artist to practice in Raleigh, NC.  Hew was renowned for his precisely drawn details and his commitment to faithfully documenting the scenes he was painting.  This painting is one of his most famous and most significant, since it is one of the earliest visual representations of the original State House.
