Digital Preservation Quick Tip: Use the descriptive features offered by your software.

Software programs often have a place (sometimes called “properties” or “metadata”) for you to enter information about the file you’re working on, like author name, keywords, or description.  If that information is completed, programs accessing the file will be able to display those details or use them to organize your files.  If you take a minute to enter this extra information, you can help future users understand where the file came from, how it’s different from others, and what it was originally for.
